Temperatures are falling in Spain. But it is still hot and the fires in nature have not yet been extinguished.
Madrid – The Spaniards were able to breathe a sigh of relief for the first time on Sunday. After an unusually severe heat wave that lasted for days, temperatures fell back to below 40 degrees in many parts of the country, and in some areas even below 30 degrees.
In Zaragoza, for example, only 34 degrees were expected after up to 42 degrees the day before. It was also more bearable again on the popular holiday island of Mallorca with around 30 degrees in the coastal regions. Some of the forest fires that have broken out in the past few days are still raging.
villagers to safety
According to the regional government, the situation in Navarre remained “very critical” with five active fires. Because of the wind, the situation is unpredictable. All available forces are deployed. The residents of several smaller towns such as Etxarren, Arzoz, Muskiz or San Martín de Unx have been brought to safety.
However, the worst fire in the Sierra de la Culebra mountain range, not far from the border with Portugal in north-west Spain, was brought under control thanks to lower temperatures and some rainfall. Around 25,000 hectares of forest had been destroyed there. The situation also eased in Catalonia. Most of the fires were either extinguished or at least brought under control, the regional government said.
Heat waves are increasing in Spain, said Aemet spokesman Rubén del Campo. The absolute record was measured last August in Montoro in Andalusia: 47.4 degrees. This development is due to man-made climate change. Del Campo warned in an interview with the newspaper “La Vanguardia” that one should not be surprised if the 50-degree mark is reached at some point. dpa
