According to the Spanish resident register abroad (Pere) of the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the Spanish population resident abroad increased 4.7%, which represents an increase of 137,317 people during the year 2024 and stood at a total of 3,045,966 people to January 1, 2025, the historical maximum since this record began (2009).
As of January 1, 2019, the number of Spaniards residing abroad was 2,545,729, compared to 3,045,966 registered on January 1, 2025, demonstrating a significant increase year after year. In 2024 they were 2,908,649.
The foreign countries in which more people of Spanish nationality resided as of January 1, 2025 were Argentina (505,940), France (320,749) and the United States of America (220.715) and the countries that have suffered a greater increase of people with Spanish nationality are Argentina, Mexico and the United States.
In absolute terms, the greatest growth of the Spanish population during 2024 were recorded in Argentina (23,764 more), Mexico (17,937) and the United States of America (14,437).
By continent, 59.3% of registered people had their residence in America, 37.2% in Europe and 3.6% in the rest of the world. The greatest enrolled increases during the year 2024 occurred in America (97,735 more) and Europe (36,079). In relative terms, the greatest increases occurred in America (5.7%) and Asia (5.4%).
It should be noted that four out of five new inscriptions to Pere for 2024 corresponded to born outside Spain. Thus, 71.8% (2,186,588 people) of the Spaniards who resided abroad to January 1, 2025 were born outside of Spain. And 59.5% (1,811,878), in its current country of residence.
On the other hand, in relation to people with Spanish nationality and born in Spain who live abroad, In 2024 residents dominated in Europe (62.3% of the total) and America (26.5%). By age group, the highest increases were registered among the population aged 16 to 64 (68.4%) and in children under 16 (25.7%).
