Spain protests the laws that prevent operating from UNRWA and claims Israel to suspend them

The Government has claimed the suspension of laws that prevent the UN Agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) to operate in the occupied Palestinian territories and has transferred its concern about the impact that this measure can have on the humanitarian situation in The Gaza Strip.

“The Government rejects the entry into force of the Knesset laws that prevent UNRWA from operations in the occupied Palestinian territories, and demands the suspension of its application,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and cooperation in a statement .

“Spain expresses its deepest concern for the impact that this decision will have on the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the rest of the occupied Palestinian territories, endangering the high the fire initiated on January 19,” he added.

Thus, the government has again maintained that “UNRWA is essential and irreplaceable for the life of the six million refugees to which it provides essential services, and for regional stability” and wanted to make it clear, as it has been doing in the last months, that “Spain firmly supports its work.”

The Israeli Parliament approved last October two bills To prohibit the activities of the agency in the country and in East Jerusalem, illegally occupied since 1967, a fact rejected by the international community, which supports that this part of the city is the capital of the future state of Palestine.

One of these projects designates UNRWA as a “terrorist” organization and prohibits Israeli officials which would make its humanitarian work difficult in the Palestinian occupied territories.
