The report is based on data from 1,200 European universities that have generated patent applications at the EPO between 2000 and 2020. In addition to patent applications that are filed directly by the universities themselves, The study also examines indirect applications submitted by other entities or companies that name university researchers among their inventors. “Europe has a long tradition of academic excellence, but “Sometimes we encounter difficulties when bringing inventions to the commercial field.”declared the president of the EPO, António Campinos.
“This study sheds light on the academic inventive capacity across Europe to contribute evidence to the development of policies and strategies. By taking advantage of the potential granted by patents through licenses, collaboration agreements or the creation of ‘spin-outs’ , universities can amplify their impact, boosting both the market value of their work and its social value. As the recent Draghi report highlights, There is still a lot of work to do to achieve a single market for research and technology in Europe. In fact, our study reveals that 10% of startups with academic patents are based in the United States,” he added.
