The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has warned about the formation of a new DANA (Isolated Depression at High Levels) that will affect the country. He has asked the population to remain attentive to weather warnings and to take extreme precautions given the uncertainty of the situation and its “potentially adverse” nature.
The agency has detected a mass of cold air moving from the north to the southwest of Europe. The atmospheric anomaly will cause a general drop in temperatures in the Iberian Peninsula, the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands. He explains that “this DANA will deepen into the Mediterranean starting on Wednesday and will remain in the environment at least until Saturday. The increase in instability will be accompanied by the entry of a humid Mediterranean flow from the east, so it is likely that there will be very strong and persistent rainfall accompanied by storms and maritime storms.” It warns that there is “a wide uncertainty” regarding the position of the phenomenon and the intensity and distribution of the rainfall it will cause.
What is expected from the new DANA in Spain
The agency predicts that the towns of Pitiusas and Mallorca will experience “especially intense” rain, with accumulations of rainwater of up to 80 millimeters, starting on Tuesday. He anticipates similar events in Barcelona and Alicante. Precipitation in the form of snow is expected in the Cantabrian Sea and north of the Pyrenees mountain range. Very strong gusts of wind are expected in the high areas of the mountain systems.
“On Wednesday it is likely that the rains will extend across a good part of the Peninsula. The areas that could experience very strong, torrential and persistent rainfall are Empordà and the provinces of Malaga and Granada,” adds the AEMET. DANA is expected to lose intensity and downgrade to a conventional storm on Thursday. The agency reiterates that “the uncertainty about the evolution of the episode is very high.”
General precautionary recommendations
Various regions of Spain were affected by DANA that hit Valencia a few weeks ago. The storm caused the death of 210 people. Faced with the new threat, AEMET authorities have asked for extreme precautions in coastal and mountainous areas, where the risk of floods and landslides is significant. They recommend residents of vulnerable regions to follow updates on the phenomenon through their page web and official communication channels.
The agency has warned about the existence of a campaign that tries to impersonate its identity to, within the framework of the contingency, defraud citizens. “Some users have reported that they received an SMS accompanied by a link supposedly on behalf of the AEMET. This is false. [La dependencia] never sends these types of notifications. If you receive a similar message, do not open the link. Our app It can only be downloaded from official application stores,” the agency warns.
The malicious initiative aims to take advantage of the confusion that has been generated around ES-Alert, the mobile emergency alert system implemented by the Spanish Government in 2022. The platform is an adaptation of the EU-Alert protocol for disseminating risk warnings. . The General Directorate of Protection and Emergencies points out that the tool “is available to the emergency coordination centers of the autonomous communities within the framework of the National Civil Protection System. These organizations, together with the National Emergency Monitoring and Coordination Center of the Ministry of the Interior, are responsible within their area of competence for defining and issuing alerts when the situation warrants it.”
How to check if your mobile phone has emergency alerts active?
ES-Alert has some limitations. Despite this, it has proven to be a useful resource. It is supported by technology Cell Broadcast System (CBS) which is capable of sending simultaneous SMS messages of up to 93 characters to all cell phones located in a georeferenced area. It works regardless of the telephone provider of each device and does not require an internet connection or mobile data. It operates with 4G and 5G network technologies that cover more than 90% of the mobile telephone service coverage in the Spanish market. It is enabled by default on all mobile phones that have been sold in Spain from 2022 onwards. However, experts recommend verifying the correct configuration of the alerts. To do this, it is necessary to perform the following actions:
Android
- Access the “Settings” or “Settings” application on your mobile.
- Select the “Notifications” option.
- Look in the drop-down menu for the “Wireless Emergency Alerts” section to check that the alternative is activated.
iOS
- Access the “Settings” section of the device.
- Click on the “Notifications” section.
- You must slide down to find the “ES-Alert” option. From there it is possible to verify if the resource is enabled.
