Spain occupies ninth place in the ranking of countries that lose the most luggage worldwide. In fact, in the last month alone, nearly 60,000 suitcases have been lost according to data from the technology company Airhelp cited by Europa Press.
Thus, according to these data, one in every 125 suitcases that pass through a Spanish airport is lost, damaged or delayed, which represents an incident rate of 0.8%. This percentage is 0.12% in the case of Barcelona-El Prat, which is the only Spanish one that appears among those with the best performance in baggage handling.
According to this report, worldwide, last year there were a total of 36.1 million suitcases affectedcausing incidents to more than 5.2 billion passengers. This represents an increase compared to 26 million in 2022. Thus, most of the problems arise from delays (77%), followed by damage (18%) and definitive losses (5%).
Iberia, second airline with the most problems with luggage
Spanish airlines present worrying results in baggage management, Airhelp provides. Iberia is the second with a higher rate of problems with luggage pieces. According to the data studied, 3.3% of the suitcases checked by the company are lost or damaged, which represents one in every 30 packages.
For its part, Vueling is in 16th place in the ranking, although the problem rate is 0.8% – that is, one in every 125 suitcases.
Air Europa is the last Spanish airline that appears in the ranking and also does so, highlighting its poor performance in this area. In his case, he is in 30th position, losing or damaging 0.55% of the suitcases, that is, one in every 183.
In this situation, AirHelp reminds the compensation to which passengers are entitled in case of problems with luggage. In the case of breakage, the amount of the claim can rise up to 1,385 euros (depending on the annual devaluation of the purchase price of the suitcase); and in the case of delay the compensation can be raised up to 1,385 euros to cover replacement costs, depending on the duration and nature of the trip.
If the suitcase does not arrive after 21 days, it is considered lostand you can also claim up to 1,385 euros depending on the current value of the content.
To facilitate claims, AirHelp recommends photographing luggage before traveling, obtaining the PIR at the airport in case of an incident, and keeping receipts for replacement purchases if luggage does not arrive for more than three hours.
