The recent votes they have left us a political landscape where we glimpse the next president of Mexico. In the midst of the electoral effervescence, it is essential to remember that the poetry is essential in our cultureas means of expression of our emotions and experiences in a unique way through language.
Politics and culture, so intrinsically linked, use words to reach minds and hearts. With new leadership at the door, it is vital to advocate for strengthening support for the artistic and intellectual development. The poetryin particular, needs space to flourish, where new voices learn from expert poets in mentoring programs. Also, the creation of poetry festivals in rural areas that traditionally lack access to events and each voice finds a place to resonate with its unique knowledge and sensitivity.
As Walt Whitman expressed: “Don’t stop believing that words and actions poems can change the world”. A place without poetry is a dry space, without the tones that enrich our perception of the world. During the 20th century, poets such as Octavio Paz and Salvador Novo challenged social and political norms, sowing an indelible cultural legacy in our country. Poetry creation and discussion groups must expand to keep creativity and reflection alive. Poetry invites us to see reality with imagination, to question our environment, and in these times of change, its presence is more necessary than ever. It must be accessible to everyone, in the city, rural areas and indigenous communities.
We hope that the new administration with its strategies recognizes the importance of culture and art in public life, as well as other sectors such as the economy, health and education. That spaces be created and maintained where poetry can develop, encouraging discussions and supporting initiatives that bring poetry to every corner of the country. Our future deserves to be built on a rich cultural tradition that celebrates poetry and artistic creation in all its forms, without discrimination or censorship.
May the next president of Mexico be not only a political leader, but also a promoter of culture and art. Just a six-year term is not enough, support for expression must be inherent, regardless of philosophical or political ideology. Professor Kipling said it in the movie Dead Poets Society: “We don’t read and write poetry because it is pretty. We read and write poetry because we belong to the human race. And the human race is full of passion”; and under that beam of light, let us inhabit the beautiful world of letters with our eyes open and collect flowers while we can.
