There is a desire to switch to laser because it enables more efficient transmission of information to Earth. According to Nasa, lasers can transmit information from space 10 to 100 times more efficiently than radio frequencies.
Laser systems are also practical because the equipment they require is lighter, smaller and requires less energy to operate than equipment that uses radio frequencies.
A laser transmitter launched into space on Tuesday will orbit the Earth at an altitude of about 35,000 kilometers. The device is being tested at ground stations located in California and Hawaii.
