More gravel, less asphalt. We can thus summarize the extensive restyling that the layout of Spa-Francorchamps is advocating to obtain sufficient homologation to host the World Endurance Motorcycling World Championship, the FIM EWC. The anticipated synthesis, however, should not be trivialized. The legendary Belgian circuit will not be altered one iota, on the contrary, it will be safer and will forgive even less any errors to the drivers regardless of the vehicle driven.
To make the circuit that winds through the Ardennes forest safe for motorcycles, the organizers are working in different areas of the track. The asphalt escape route at the exit of the Brussels bend (number 10, 180 ° downhill to the right after the Les Combes chicane at the end of the Kemmel straight) has been transformed back to gravel. Also not indifferent is the effort in place in the very fast section of Blanchimont where the barrier has been moved to allow more gravel to be introduced between the runway and the protective tires. At that point too, the asphalt escape route will be transformed into gravel and a new service road will also be created, crucial for providing any help in a more timely manner.

The works in progress, as we had already pointed out, also concern the iconic climb that leads to Eau Rogue-Raidillon, a stretch where the stands and the chalet were demolished to widen the escape route, thus preventing the ‘rebound’ effect after the impact with the barriers, a dynamic that has characterized all the latest most dramatic accidents, obviously including what is cost Anthoine Hubert his life in F2 in 2019. The ‘Endurance 24’ grandstand next to the descent connecting the Source and Eau Rouge was also demolished. It will be replaced by a more modern and more integrated structure in terms of environmental impact with the surrounding nature. Speaking of the ‘Sorgente’ curve, the first for single-seater races, the currently almost non-existent escape route will be significantly widened in order not to transform that point into a more than dangerous area for motorcyclists.
