The initiative seeks to mitigate the risks due to the increase in cross-border tensions.

The South Korean Army plans to start using artificial intelligence (AI) in the surveillance systems of some posts next to the border with North Korea, as announced today by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA).

The initiative seeks to replace obsolete systems and better detect possible threats along the dividing line at a time marked by increased cross-border tensions after Pyongyang announced in November that it would stop implementing a 2018 military agreement designed to avoid friction in the areas around the demilitarized zone (DMZ) that separates both countries.

These new systems will begin to be installed in the front line guard posts of the Eastern Front and also in coastal surveillance units, as explained by the DAPA in a statement.

The system uses AI to analyze images and try to detect humans and animals and is equipped with thermal vision and shortwave infrared radiation to improve detection in adverse weather conditions and, according to DAPA, will help minimize the number of false alarms each year they must attend these border posts.

The announcement comes after for three consecutive days the North Korean army carried out artillery maneuvers near the maritime dividing line with the South in the Yellow Sea (called the West Sea in both Koreas) that led the South Korean authorities to evacuate to shelters. to local residents and respond with their own live-fire drills last Friday.

In turn, Seoul has announced that, given the North's insistence on carrying out artillery practices in this areaa, will also resume its maneuvers in the Yellow Sea, which had been prohibited under the aforementioned 2018 military agreement.
