South Korean officials said Monday that strong winds caused by Typhoon Nanmadol caused trees to fall and power outages in the southeast, injuring one person and evacuating hundreds.
With a central air pressure of 960 hectopascals and a maximum wind speed of 39 meters per second, the 14th typhoon of this year was moving north near Kagoshima, Japan, at a speed of 18 kilometers per hour by 6 a.m. local time, Yonhap News Agency reported. 2100 GMT Sunday), according to South Korea’s Central Safety and Anti-Disaster Measures Headquarters.
Nanmadol is expected to approach the southeastern port city of Busan at 10 a.m. local time before moving to waters west of Japan’s Osaka at 3 p.m.
The typhoon dumped about 50 mm of rain in the Gyeongsang region in southeastern South Korea, including Busan and Ulsan. Busan suffered from strong winds of up to 33.9 meters per second.
One person was slightly injured in Busan after a flower pot fell on him at a subway station. Hundreds of families in Ulsan were without electricity for up to three hours between Sunday night and Monday morning.
A total of 772 people from 620 families in North Gyeongsang Province, Busan and other places were evacuated for safety reasons, while 101 families in Busan and Ulsan suffered power outages.
