The impact that streaming services have had on the production of series and movies is undeniable. Large companies not only have to compete against Netflix, but they themselves have taken on the task of expanding this market in a dangerous way. However, a company that does not wish to follow this path is sony.
At a recent investor meeting a couple of days ago, Tony Vinciquerra, CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, revealed that at the moment the company has no plans to create its own streaming platform. Instead, they will focus on creating worthwhile products that not only reinforce their properties, but that they are attractive to potential buyers. This is what he said about it:
“We are looking for strategic investments… that complement our plans. We are not going to deviate from the strategy that has been enormously successful for us in recent years. We will not make investments that do not complement our core strategy, and our strategy is to have more intellectual property, more products, and more libraries to sell. We are not going to get into other businesses. We’re not going into a general entertainment streaming service. “We are not going to operate other businesses that are outside the strategy we have defined.”
This means that while some of Sony’s movies will come to services like Amazon Prime Video and Netflix, they have no intention of creating their own platform. The only exception to this is Crunchyroll, which they acquired a long time ago, and Vinciquerra assures that it will continue to grow in the future. This is what he said about it:
“Crunchyroll will be the main growth driver in the coming years.
“We will soon launch it in India and Southeast Asia on Amazon channels.”
Thus, It’s clear that Sony+, or whatever this service might be called, won’t happen, at least not while Vinciquerra is CEO.. On related topics, Sony is developing its own mobile store. Likewise, Sony assures that the PS5 is its most profitable generation.
Author’s Note:
It’s good to see that not everyone is interested in creating their own streaming service. While Sony has the bookstore to make this a reality, its business is more focused on making money by selling products, and not on getting the attention of the general public.
