Paramount Pictures announced the withdrawal of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 And The Lost City since the release in Russia. Following the trail of attacks following the attempted invasion of Ukrainethe studios have begun to withdraw their shows from Russia.
Many have already canceled planned releases and upcoming previews from the country, and now Paramount Pictures joins the list with a major hit: nothing. Sonic 2 and nothing The Lost of City for Russia (at least for the moment). Today, Tuesday 1 March 2022, the withdrawal of the two expected films from Russian cinemas was announced.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 And The Lost City will have a world premiere in the next couple of months, but now there will be one country less on the list of presentations. In a statement, Paramount Pictures said:
As we witness the ongoing tragedy in Ukraine, we have decided to suspend the theatrical release of our upcoming films, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and The Lost City. We stand by all those affected by the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, Russia and our international markets, and we will continue to monitor the situation as it evolves.
The theatrical exodus to Russia took over on Monday, when three of the industry’s leading studios announced the interruption of upcoming releases in the country. At the top of the list is Disneywhich has momentarily suspended every exitstarting from Turning Red Pixar (if the situation doesn’t improve, probably Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will do the same thing, in May).
Then it was the turn of Warner Bros. who has decided to cancel the release of The Batmancurrently the biggest movie on its calendar, soon joined by Fantastic Beasts 3: Dumbledore’s Secrets. Also Sony Pictures gave his blow to Russia by retreating Morbius of the Marvel universe.
Disney said in a statement following the announcement of the withdrawals:
Given the unmotivated invasion of Ukraine and the tragic humanitarian crisis that is following it, we are pausing the release of cinematic films in Russia, including Pixar’s upcoming Turning Red. We will make future business decisions as the situation evolves. Meanwhile, given the scale of the emergency and the growing number of refugees, we are working with our NGOs to provide urgent aid and other assistance to refugees.
