The universe of League of Legends it is vast and extremely full of characters and places that deserve to be told with all the trappings: this is the case of the story of Nunu and Willumpwho go from beating themselves up in the role of tank in LoL to hopping from one sheet of ice to another in an attempt to find their lost affections and also, ultimately, themselves. Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story is a spin-off of LoL that allows us to get to know the boy and the yeti more closely: will this title have managed to keep up with the hunger of the great franchise from which it actually emerged? Let's find out in our review.
Immersed in the icy lands of the Freljord
The title is set in the lands of Freljordthe vast ice world of the League of Legends universe: it is precisely here that the young Nunu of the Notaj and Willump, the last yeti of the region, meet, and it is always between these frozen pillars that the great adventure that will act as the definitive glue for their friendship.
Our task will be that of find Nunu's mother, of which traces were lost following a violent attack by marauders on our protagonist's Notaj caravan. During our adventure we will meet a small number of characters who appear directly from the “mother game” with great naturalness: those who know the various MOBA champions well will only be able to exclaim at least once “Hey, but that's…!“.
The plot of the title is therefore simple, balanced, and never excessively verbose: moments of action, amazement and emotion alternate in a studied manner, and overall our adventure will hardly surpass the 10 hours. In short, it is about a short but intense epic.
An indiscreet eye to the past
Being a spin-off, Song of Nunu is not a MOBA or anything that might resemble it, we are in fact faced with a 3D platform adventure that takes great inspiration from the cornerstones of the genre. On our little human feet or on Willump's back, we have the ability to run, jump, climb, throw snowballs and, if necessary, fight.
The limited number of actions we can perform makes the gameplay of this title decidedly minimal. This is an aspect that we could have considered rather obvious within a title of the 3D platform genre from the early 2000s, however in 2024 the recreational offer could be too narrow.
The world we are called to explore is, as anticipated, an expanse of ice interspersed with some abandoned ships and as many caves to explore. There map is smallAnd not particularly varied in the settings, proving more essential than ever and faithful to the basic concept of the title, also finding some references to League of Legends scattered here and there that fans will appreciate.
During our exploration phases we will also find ourselves solving some environmental puzzles, which in principle are very simple: hitting veiled objects, using small shortcuts and solving small puzzles will be quite frequent during the adventure, but the The puzzles didn't seem particularly brilliant to usindeed, if anything rather repetitive as a whole.
In short, from every aspect of the gameplay, we are faced with a title that seems to shout out its desire to be simple, intuitive And quick to understandmaybe also too. Not an absolute bad thing, certainly, but not even what the most close-knit LoL players would probably have expected.
Song of Nunu in his PS5 version it defended itself very well from a technical point of view, and we did not encounter any drops in frame rate or slowdowns, also thanks to a graphic style that gets straight to the point without frills that could “weigh down” the experience. However, we were less than satisfied with it little use of the potential of DualSense which, between vibration and movement sensors, could have made the experience much more immersive.
We do a dutiful round of applause then to the cabin of dubbing: the title is entirely dubbed into Italian and the voices (among which names such as that of Davide Garbolino) seemed extremely in line with the characters, giving us a decidedly high-quality auditory experience. As regards the soundtrack, we did not find any particular and charismatic “strokes of genius”, but all in all we are faced with an audio sector which, as a whole, enriches positively the gaming experience.
