In addition to numerous party representatives, Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder also condemned the attack on Matthias Ecke and called for consequences.
Munich – After the attack on SPD MEP Matthias Ecke in Dresden on Friday, numerous politicians across Germany spoke out over the weekend and condemned the act. The Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder also spoke up in a post on the short message service X and called for “a clear response from the constitutional state”.
In his comment, Söder called the attack on the 41-year-old Saxon SPD leading candidate in the European elections, who was so seriously injured that he had to be operated on, “disgraceful, cowardly and unacceptable” and a sign of “a relapse into what was believed to have long been overcome times”. Söder pointed out that disputes in a democracy should be “conducted exclusively with arguments” and “never with physical violence”.
Attack on Matthias Ecke: SPD politician was beaten up while posting posters
As previously known, Ecke was attacked by four perpetrators on Friday evening in the Dresden district of Striesen while posting posters for the European elections. According to a report by the AFP news agency, the same group had previously allegedly attacked a 28-year-old who had put up election posters for the Greens. One of the suspected perpetrators, a 17-year-old who had not yet been noticed by the police, turned himself in to the authorities on Sunday, according to police reports.
As a consequence of the attack, the chairman of the Conference of Interior Ministers, Brandenburg’s CDU Interior Minister Michael Stübgen, has announced an unscheduled meeting of his departmental colleagues for the coming week, at which the increasing attacks on officials and elected officials as well as emergency services and police officers. The CDU politician condemned the current events as an “attack on our democracy”.
Planned Interior Minister meeting: Politicians demand “decisive action”
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) also announced that the constitutional state must show a “clear edge”. Saxony’s CDU Interior Minister Armin Schuster announced “meticulous” investigations. Other comments, such as that of SPD leader Saskia Esken to the broadcaster NDR, also took the AfD to task. The party leader accused the right-wing populists of creating a climate in Germany that makes “such acts” possible.
North Rhine-Westphalia’s Interior Minister Herbert Reul complained that after the attack on Ecke “the same story” was being played again and that action had to finally follow: “What is needed now is decisive, solidarity-based action by all state institutions against this increasing willingness to use violence “Consistent prosecution with effective judgments and finally respectful coexistence in society again,” demanded the CDU politician.
