Unusually a large amount of snow makes it difficult to plow the streets of Helsinki, the city informs. In addition, road maintenance is hampered by the depletion of street salt stocks.

The depletion of street salt is not only a problem in Helsinki, but salt reserves are insufficient in the entire region of Southern Finland, says the City of Helsinki’s street maintenance team manager Tarja Myller.

“Large quantities of salt are imported by ship from Europe. This ship, which is now expected, will hopefully arrive in two weeks, ”Myller says.

According to him, normal quantities of salt have been ordered in the autumn, but due to the exceptionally snowy winter, it has been consumed more than usual.

Myller says the city is currently regulating the use of street salt. It is focused on combating slipperiness on guardrails and intersections, and as a result, even busier streets can be bumpy and difficult to navigate.

Lumen exports, on the other hand, have slowed down due to the filling of snow collection points.

According to the city, nearly 80,000 loads have been transported to reception centers this winter, which is usually half as much.

To alleviate the situation, the city has opened seven temporary snow collection sites. In addition, there are nine actual snow pick-up locations. However, according to the city, several spare seats are already full, and some of the actual reception places are filling up.

The city reports that snow work is now being done around the clock, and a record number of additional equipment has been ordered. There are almost 400 winter care units in use.

The city has tried to make parking more difficult due to the snow by opening Hietalahdentori as a temporary parking place for residents.
