“With deep concern we note a lack of completeness in addressing the complexity and importance of the medical on-call service in public health care. The medical on-call service was established for non-deferrable interventions that do not require immediate emergency-urgent intervention and over time it has become an indispensable and strategic point of reference for the entire community”. Thus, the national manager of the National Autonomous Union of Italian Doctors (Snami) Continuity of Care, Giancarmelo La Manna, responds – in a note – to the television report of 'Furoi dal coro'', on Rete 4, on the alleged shortcomings of continuity of care.
“The aging of the population and the increase in chronic pathologies – adds Federico Di Renzo, national manager of Snami doctors in training and specialization – are opposed to a reduction in resources allocated to hospital facilities and emergency rooms, without an enhancement of territorial resources , such as the medical emergency service, which have suffered further cuts and closures. This situation has led to a shortage of white coats in local facilities and, in particular, in the medical emergency service, causing an impoverishment of organization and healthcare provision, see home visits”.
In the broadcast, “the citation of the Supreme Court ruling condemning a healthcare worker serving in continuity of care – explains La Manna – refers to a particular and extraordinary case which does not represent the regularity of the service's activity. It therefore tends to represent an attempt to discredit the numerous colleagues who regularly carry out a valuable service. In essence – he concludes – we are looking for a needle in the haystack for television needs and, in fact, an entire category is involved”.
