Slovenia recognized Palestine as an independent, sovereign state after the Slovenian Parliament approved the government’s request for recognition in a special session held the day before yesterday evening, by a majority of 52 representatives of the 90-member Parliament. The Slovenian government, in a blog post on the “X” platform, welcomed Parliament’s approval of the government’s request to recognize the State of Palestine, as Prime Minister Robert Golub described this step as “a message of hope to the Palestinian people in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.”
The session witnessed a boycott of the voting process by conservative opposition parties.
With this step, Slovenia will be the fourth European country to officially recognize Palestine as an independent state, after Spain, Ireland, and Norway preceded it last week.
According to some observers, recognition of the State of Palestine will give the European Union election campaign in Slovenia momentum. At the same time, some political observers also believe that the government has accelerated the procedures for recognizing Palestine for a number of reasons, including the European elections scheduled for the end of this week, in order to mobilize its voters. According to polls, the majority of public opinion in Slovenia supports recognition of the State of Palestine.
Last Thursday, Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Vajon announced her country’s government’s intention to recognize the independence and sovereignty of the State of Palestine.
