Moilanen, 20, who grabbed sprint gold at the World Championships under the age of 20 last year, was fifth in his semi-finals. Niemelä, 20, was sixth in the semi-finals.
Jasmin Kähärä went on a sprint among medal favorites, but he dropped out already in the term. Kähärä, who had finished second in the time trial, was third in one, and there was not enough time to continue through the time comparison.
Swedish Moa Hansson won the women’s sprint. Switzerland Valerio Grond pushed to win the men’s competition.
