The environmentalist Alberto Vizcaino is the author of ‘Yellow Container SA’a book very critical of the current waste management model in force in Spainclosely linked to the organization Ecoembes. This Thursday he will speak at The Madness of Mieres on alternatives to burning waste. It will be at 7 p.m. in an event organized by the Consumer Union, Ecoloxistes n´Aiónhe Council for the Xusta Transition and the Platform in Defense of Public Health and Sanitation.
Vizcaino condenses at the request of NORTH in seven reasons why he considers it preferable not to opt for burning Solid Recovered Fueland instead promote alternatives based on recycling and waste reduction.
1. “Because it is a loss of materials for a circular economy. Defenders of incineration argue that burning CSR is also a circular economy, since electricity is generated with it, but we are really making a usable material disappear for the productive system.”
2. “It produces greenhouse emissions, since CSR is fundamentally plastic, a fossil fuel that accelerates global warming.”
3. “Because we have reasonable doubts about the health effects of gaseous emissions produced by burning waste.”
4. “Because it unbalances the economic balance of the circular economy by transferring to public administrations costs that should be assumed by manufacturers of disposable products.”
5. “Because it is a way of perpetuating the throwaway model, which delays the application of measures to prevent and reduce waste.”
6. “Because it generates comparatively less employment than selective collection and classification of waste for subsequent recycling”
7. “Because it doesn’t seem clear that money can be made by producing energy from CSR. Everything seems more like a business based on taking public money to build facilities. The business is in the construction of the incinerators, and not in the production of electricity.”
