Jannik Sinner wins the 2024 US Open. The Italian, world number 1, beat the American Taylor Fritz, number 12 in the ranking, 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 in 2 hours and 16 minutes in the final today. The 23-year-old from Alto Adige, the first Italian to triumph in the men’s singles in New York, wins his sixth title of the year, his sixteenth overall and the second Slam of his career after the Australian Open at the beginning of 2024 (when he knocked out Russian Daniil Medvedev in the final).

Sinner wins US Open 2024, Fritz defeated in final, the match
The theme of the match is clear from the very first moments. Fritz must always take maximum risks to hold the exchange and cannot afford to drop: as soon as the American’s level drops, Sinner breaks through. The Italian starts with an immediate break but is caught at 2-2 after the only empty passage of the first set. Fritz’s serve does not take off (38% of first serves) and for the Californian there is no escape. Sinner places another 2 breaks, commanding the exchanges with his forehand and forcing his opponent to make repeated errors: 6-3 in 41′.
The script of the second set changes because Fritz grows exponentially on serve. The American finds almost 90% of first serves and essentially gives Sinner nothing on his service games. The Italian proceeds on autopilot until 5-4 and then places the decisive acceleration. In the tenth game, he forces Fritz to prolong the rally. The American’s backhand crumbles: one, two, three errors. There are 2 set points for Sinner, who breaks through with a backhand down the line: 6-4, Jannik ahead 2 sets to nil after 1h16′.
The third set is very similar to the second. Sinner is on autopilot in his service games. Fritz has to rely on the lines to keep the exchanges alive and in the sixth game he needs a gift from the Italian and a couple of miracles to grab the 3-3 after having saved 2 very important break points. The Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd warms up, Fritz rewards them by playing the perfect game and obtaining the break thanks to Sinner’s double fault: the Californian is ahead 4-3 and the final is alive. The Italian deserves credit for not being overwhelmed by the chaos. He takes back control of the game and, in the tenth game, places the counterbreak offering the best of his repertoire on the return (5-5). The world number 1 regains control of the situation: he goes ahead 6-5 and sees the finish line. Fritz fades and gives up, Sinner places the break that is worth 7-5: game, set, match and tournament for Jannik.
