The indicators are clear: road insecurity in Sinaloa is on the rise. From January to September 2022, the entity had reported 7,200 road accidentswhich is equivalent to an increase of almost 52 percent compared to the same period in 2021.
In the same period, 248 people had perished in this type of event. This constitutes a 14 percent increase from last year. Despite the fact that the comparative reference occurred during the covid-19 pandemic, when social mobility was restricted, the increase has raised the alert of the authorities, who speak out for the implementation of new strategies to increase security and a prevention culture. And it is that the coincident opinion between the experts is that many of the road accidents are preventable.
It is not difficult to agree on the latter when the background is reviewed. As he stated in a recent conference, speeding is the leading cause of road accidents in Sinaloa. This is followed by the combination of alcohol and other drugs with the wheel, and in third place the use of cell phones while driving.
