He Minister of Education, Vocational Training and University, Sergio Silva, has continued to attack the mobilized teacherswhom he has accused of “pressure measurements” that says not to share, following the statements of the President of the Government, María José Sáenz de Buruagawho said they had “attitudes that I do not recognize in real unionism”. This is how he referred to confinement for ten days of several union representatives in the headquarters of the Government of Cantabria to demand a salary adjustment for the sector, which has not been updated for 16 years.
The teachers have put this Thursday end to this confinementand have announced that they will begin with closures in the different educational centers in the next few days, after dhe days of demands in the streets in which more than 2,000 people have gathered.
In one interview given to RNE and collected by Europa Presshas assured that “it is neither the time nor the way” to make these claims, which raise an increase of 325 euros per month. According to Silva, thiss “they have been the most tense and worrying days” of the 17 months he has been at the head of the Ministryand has insisted on “exquisite” treatment with the locked-up teachers to “prevent this from getting out of hand,” although they went so far as to report that at one point it was difficult for them to access food to help their classmates.
“CANTABRIAN TEACHERS ARE AMONG THE BEST PAID IN THE COUNTRY”
TO the salary increase, which Silva has described as “disproportionate”Silva has made reference to a study recently published by UGT in which it is stated that Cantabrian teachers are among the “best paid in the country”and has reiterated that this proposal would have a budgetary impact of almost 40 million, which “for us is maximum.”
In this sense, it has influenced that in the accounts for 2025, agreed with the PRC, the agreements are already included to which the Ministry and the JPD have reached this year, with an “effort – he highlighted – on the part of the Government to allocate 415 million to teaching staff of the 751,740,713 euros” that his entire department will have.
Regarding the salary increase, he stressed that “it does not fit” in next year’s budget and has left the door open to future negotiations for 2026.. Thus, he assured that on the 22nd they presented a proposal to the JPD that includes “sitting down and talking in the first quarter of 2025.” “At the moment we have not had an official response,” said the counselor.
