An important step forward for inclusiveness and the innovation technology: the first avatar that responds to emergencies arrives in Sign Language (LIS)Developed in Italy, this tool will allow deaf people to independently manage emergency requests to 112.
An Italian initiative for inclusiveness
This avatar represents a revolution for deaf people. Created by the Siena company QuestIt, in collaboration with the Turin company Regola, the goal is to provide immediate and autonomous access to emergency services.
“We believe that any digital service must be inclusive and technologically ready to support users in the language most suited to their needs,”
says Ernesto Di Iorio, CEO of QuestIt. For Di Iorio, Innovation and inclusiveness must go hand in hand.
Sign Language: How the Avatar Works
How the avatar works is simple and intuitive. After calling the number 800 800 112, the user will receive a link on their smartphone. This link will allow them to interact with the virtual assistant who, once it has understood the nature of the emergency, will pass the information to a human operator. “The citizen will be able to use his smartphone to receive questions and instructions in LIS, even without the need for an interpreter,” explains Massimiliano Palma, CEO of Regola.
Turin, the heart of experimentation
The first experimentation of this innovative avatar will take place in House of Emerging Technologies (Cte Next) of Turina project funded by the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy. Chiara Foglietta, Councillor for Ecological and Digital Transition, Innovation, Mobility and Transport of the City of Turin, underlined how innovation is at the heart of the city’s policies:
“Turin has placed innovation at its core, understood as experimentation of new solutions that improve the quality of life. For this reason, with Cte Nextwe have decided to support emerging technologies that bring concrete results for citizens”.
Towards a more accessible future
This project is a big step towards a more accessible future for all. Using technology to break down communication barriers is a tangible sign of how innovation can improve people’s lives, making essential services accessible to everyone, regardless of their abilities.
QuestIt and Regola’s initiative could be just the beginning of a broader change, with other cities and services adopting similar technologies. The hope is that this Italian example can inspire other nations to invest in inclusive technological solutions.
The arrival of this avatar is a positive sign for inclusiveness and the innovation. It is a concrete example of how technology can be used to improve people’s lives, making emergency services more accessible and autonomous for the deaf.
And you, what do you think about this innovation? Do you think other cities should adopt similar technologies to improve accessibility to essential services?
