The squatting It continues to be one of the problems that most affects Spain. Hundreds of owners have been victims in the last few months of this type of crimes against private propertywhich are difficult to confront: those who commit them do so with strategies that prevent the justice can act immediately.
One of the latest cases that has come to light has taken place in Ibizaspecifically in the Santa Eulària area, where a family from Barcelona is living a real hell for evict a squatted property. According to The Newspaper of Ibiza and Formenteraa few years ago the owners of the property, located in the balearic archipelagoagreed to let a young man, a friend of one of the relatives, settle in the house for a few months and, now, He asks them for 25,000 euros to leave.
A friend of the owners asked to stay in the house for a few months
The mess began at the end of 2022, when the son of the owner of the home filed a friendship with a young man whom he met in a gym in the upper area of Barcelona. In one of these multiple conversations, he revealed that his family had a house where they used to spend their holidays in Ibiza.
It was then that the now squatter asked him permission to stay on the property during the summer months, with the intention of working there in the summer season. At first, the Catalan family agreed with the condition that the young man be the one will take care of the electricity and water costs during those months.
In conversations with the media mentioned above, those affected have recalled that “At first there was no problem” and that they even spent “the month of August” in the house next to him: “There was a good relationship. But when the summer ended, He has already stopped paying water and electricity costs. and there things began to get tense,” they now explain about the moment when this hell began.
He stopped paying the bills and rented the plot for caravans and trucks
During a second stay at the house, the family found that the young man, who had stopped paying his bills some time ago, had rented spaces on the plot to several caravans and trucks. «I was charging them rent.», say the owners, who found the house full of dogs, debris and doors.
This was not the only problem they had with the squatter, who also «hI had removed all the furniture and belongings from the house», with incalculable sentimental value, and «had left them in the open air»: «Now everything is destroyed because of this boy», they explain in El Periódico de Ibiza and Formentera.
After the victims of this squat confronted the criminal directly, he agreed to expel the caravans and trucks. The family thought that the young man would then leave the house, but he did not.
The squatter destroyed the house and now asks for 25,000 euros “to leave”
Upon returning to Ibiza in August, they discovered that the squatter was not only still there, but had squatted the entire house and had only allowed them access to one room: “We can’t enter our own house because he has it. He has taken out doors, he has taken down walls and when we come it’s all screams, insults and threats.
The owners are, for the moment, unable to kick the squatter out of their house and, according to his lawyer, the only solution seems to negotiate with him to leave the property. Such is the point of desperation they have reached that they have contacted a eviction companywhich intends to charge them “about 3,000 or 4,000 euros”. However, the family is opposed to going through this procedure and hopes that the squatter will end up abandoning the property, something that seems unlikely.
As the owner told El Periódico de Ibiza y Formentera, she would never have thought that the boy was capable of “doing what he has done”, something for which part of her family has beaten her. The woman admits to being “desperate” because, despite the payment, nothing guarantees that it will really go awaynot even the 25,000 euros “that he asked for to leave”: “This makes no sense. I should be able to get this kid out of there by simply calling the police but The police have already told me that they can’t do anything», he concluded in this reflection for the local media.
