The discovery of human remains in the bag caused shock in Chile, before it became clear that the matter was related to a friendly “agreement” between two nuns, according to what local authorities announced on Wednesday.
Deputy Governor Juan Fonseca said in a statement to the press: “There was an agreement (between the two nuns). The first died a year ago while the other kept (the body) in a bag because of the affection she had for it.”
The security authorities revealed that the remains belonged to a 58-year-old nun who died about a year ago, apparently due to illness, which refuted the possibility of a crime taking place.
The authorities quoted an 80-year-old nun, whose identity was not revealed, that there was a prior “agreement” between two friends to accompany each other after death.
Available data indicate that a nun planned to leave the bag containing human remains in the street while she was visiting one of her relatives, and then bury her friend.
The public prosecutor in charge of the case, Francisco Llanas, said: “According to the preliminary results, the body did not show any injuries attributed to third parties.”
“Faced with the possibility of discovering this bag containing her friend's body, she decided to leave it in the street. This is the only logical explanation we have,” Lanas added.
