The Diabetes Friends Association of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs in Sharjah noted that there are 5 main causes of low blood sugar, noting that there is no unified definition that applies to all individuals, but symptoms often appear when the sugar level drops below 70 mg / dl, or 4 mmol. / Liter.
In a brochure issued by the association, the vice president of the society, Dr. Elham Al-Amiri, explained that the causes of low blood sugar are due to taking a large dose of insulin or diabetes drugs, or eating a small amount of food, especially carbohydrates, or delaying meals, as well as exerting hard physical effort. vomiting and diarrhea;
She stated that the symptoms of low blood sugar vary according to different people and times, but the most prominent of them are: dizziness (dizziness), headache, fatigue, loss of consciousness, anxiety, tension, mood changes, blurred vision, rapid heartbeat, seizures or nervous convulsions, severe hunger, Sweating, shivering.
Al-Amiri explained that family members, classmates and work companions of the patient should know the symptoms of low blood sugar so that they can help, and if they appear on the patient and he is not in a position to test the blood sugar level, he should take any food or drink available to him and not wait. Examination so that he does not endanger himself, stressing that in this case he must refrain from driving the car completely, and the patient must repeatedly measure the level of sugar while driving for a long time.
And the Vice-President of the Diabetes Friends Association has identified 4 ways to treat simple hypoglycemia, which are: Checking blood sugar if possible to make sure, and when symptoms appear and you are able to swallow and if the rate is less than 70 mg, eat 15 grams of fast-acting carbohydrates such as: 4-5 glucose tablets, ½ cup of sweetened soft drink, ½ can of juice, 1 tablespoon of honey, jam or sugar, 3 sugar cubes dissolved in water, or 3 dates.
The means also include the 15/15 rule, whereby the patient eats 15 grams of fast carbohydrates, waits 15 minutes and then checks the blood sugar rate, and if it comes to less than 70 mg, the rule is applied again, while I mentioned that the fourth method is to eat a snack that includes On one serving (15 grams) of carbohydrates and one serving of protein such as ½ cheese sandwich or a melody, and ½ cup of milk with a small bowl of ready-made cereal, if the blood sugar level becomes more than 70 mg and the time of the main meal is after more than an hour.
With regard to severe hypoglycemia, Al-Amiri clarified that in the event of a severe drop in blood sugar so that the patient is unable to swallow or in a coma and loss of consciousness, do not give the patient anything orally, but place the patient on his side in the recovery position ( on his side, head on his forearm, bend his upper leg and pull it forward), and the unconscious patient should never be left alone.
She indicated that the patient should be given an injection of glucagon, which reverses the action of insulin and quickly raises blood sugar, and this injection is given intramuscularly in cases of severe hypoglycemia, and it must always be with the people surrounding the patient after explaining how to use it for them.
She pointed out that after giving the glucagon injection, and after the patient awakens and is able to swallow food, he must be given a meal of carbohydrates containing a source of fast-absorbing sugar such as soft drinks or fruit juice, with a source of slow-absorbing carbohydrates such as biscuits with cheese or a meat sandwich.
