Despite calls for attention from experts, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in Spain continue to increase. According to the latest data made public by the Ministry of Health and the Carlos III Health Institute, gonorrhea has increased by almost 43% between 2021 and 2023, syphilis by 24.1% and chlamydia grew by 20.7% annually. between 2016 and 2023.
The cause of this growth is already known, the lack of prevention and that in this case the condom is not used when having sexual relations. According to the report “Epidemiological Surveillance of Infections and Sexual Transmission in Spain, 2023”, since the beginning of the 2000s, an increase in the incidence of STI infections has been observed, especially in young men and women, although age varies in function of the disease.
Data recently provided by Victoria Hernando, from the National Epidemiology Center of the Carlos III Health Institute, these infections are increasing among those under 25 years of age. Some 20,000 adolescents and young people were infected with HIV, gonorrhea, syphilis or chlamydia in 2022.
To combat the growing problem of STIs, the 2021-2030 HIV and STI Prevention and Control Plan has been launched, with the aim of eliminating these infections as a public health problem by 2030 ( something that is already proven to be impossible).
In line with this plan, the Ministry of Health and the SEIMC have joined forces to develop the new STI Management Guides, guides that will be presented at the conference “Challenges and opportunities in addressing STIs”, which will take place in Valencia on October 21 and 22, 2024.
