Round of 16 / First Leg
The Andalusian team defends against PSV in Eindhoven the great 3-0 first leg at the Sánchez Pizjuán
Sevilla has once again found its particular oasis in a season plagued with difficulties through the beloved Europa League. The second continental competition, in which the Nervión club is master and lord with six titles in its showcases, also pays a special tribute with a visit to the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven. There, in May 2006, he won his first crown in the then-named UEFA Cup, the club’s first trophy after almost sixty long years of drought, so the stage will bring good memories to Jesús Navas, captain from Seville and the only survivor in the Current Seville of that historic night.
The state of the tie against PSV also allows some relaxation, as the valuable 3-0 score for Sánchez Pizjuán offers Jorge Sampaoli’s men a margin in order to earn a place in the round of 16 of the tournament. However, the Argentine coach does not forget the first part of the first leg, in which Ruud van Nistelrooy’s team dominated before running into Sevilla’s enormous effectiveness in the second act, which at times reminded the exuberant team of other times and did not to the languid version of recent times.
To avoid any type of unnecessary complication, Sampaoli took about twenty players to Eindhoven, with many problems in a defense for which he did not have Marcao, Baldé, Rekik or Gudelj. The injured Corona and Papu Gómez will not be available either, in addition to the suspended Lamela and the midfielder Pape Gueye, not registered in the European competition after joining the winter market.
Extensive part of absences, as much as that of PSV, which comes after a setback in the Dutch Eredivisie against Utrecht that places it fourth in the domestic competition, six points behind Feyenoord, leader. Van Nistelrooy, an old acquaintance of Spanish football, is aware of the difficulty of the undertaking, but does not give up on what would be an epic comeback.
