The northern Spanish region of Navarra is struggling with severe flooding on Friday. Heavy rainfall has caused rivers to burst their banks and flood homes and cars. The storm has claimed the life of at least one person. In the small village of Sunbilla, about two hours’ drive from Bilbao, a resident was fatally injured when the roof of a farmhouse collapsed as a result of a landslide.
The floods provide historical images. Videos are shared on social media of people kayaking through the streets in the regional capital of Pamplona. In the center of Villava, a small nearby town, houses are flooded up to their roofs. Numerous roads are closed and public transport is down.
Authorities in Navarra have warned residents of the “very extraordinary situation” and are advising anyone not to go out unless absolutely necessary. “The problem is not so much the amount of precipitation, but the level of the rivers,” regional interior minister Amparo Lopez said on Friday, according to Reuters news agency. Due to torrential rains and thawed snow and ice, the water level in the rivers has risen rapidly in the past 24 hours.
In the coming hours, the central and southern regions of the region are expected to experience high tides, including the towns of Peralta, Funes and Falces.
