The Senegalese parliament agreed to postpone the presidential elections to December 15 despite public protests. The move follows President Macky Sall's unprecedented announcement on Saturday of the postponement.
Riot police fired tear gas to disperse protests outside parliament as lawmakers debated the election postponement law, which initially proposed pushing the date from February 25 to August 25 and keeping Sall in power until the inauguration of his successor.
By the evening, just before the final vote, the bill had been amended to propose a later date for the elections on December 15, and was approved by a majority of 105 members in the 165-seat parliament.
