BRASILIA (Reuters) – The Senate approved on Thursday, in two rounds and by a large majority of votes, the Proposed Amendment to the Constitution (PEC) that establishes a state of emergency due to the rise in fuel prices to expand aid already and create new benefits for self-employed transporters and taxi drivers this year, in addition to providing resources for the food program.
Approved by 72 votes to 1, in the first round, and 67 to 1, in the second –well above the 49 votes required–, the PEC was expected to have a large majority given the political weight of a position against a proposal that grants aid to the to the escalation of fuel prices, even though legally the proximity of the electoral process could serve as a legal impediment to the creation of new benefits.
