The second vice president of the Government and Minister of Labor, Yolanda Díaz, admitted this morning that the Executive – of which she is a part – was not doing enough to solve the housing crisis faced by the Spanish population. Díaz has assured that both the PSOE and Sumar “share a diagnosis” of the problem, but has insisted that Pedro Sánchez’s party must push harder towards a solution.
Hours later, the deputy secretary of Culture and spokesperson for the PP, Borja Sémper, echoed her words and shared them on the social network He is not doing what he can to solve the housing problem. I agree with her.”
Díaz did not take long to respond, viciously: “Borja, you have not applied the Housing Law for a year to lower rents in 11 Autonomous Communities.”
During the last few weeks, especially after the demonstration that toured Madrid on October 13 to demand decent housing and the reduction of rental prices, the Government has received harsh criticism for “inaction” in the face of the crisis. There has been criticism of the PSOE, also criticism of Podemos and, of course, criticism of Sumar, given what the population considers an “insufficient” Housing Law. This law, approved in 2023, took, according to experts, some good steps in the regulation of rents and the reservation of land for social housing, but it left out many other problems. One of them, that the responsibility for housing is transferred to the autonomous communities.
The Minister of Labor has already asked – for the fifth time – this morning to the communities governed by the PP to begin to apply the measures of the law in their territory, such as the declaration of tension zones in order to be able to meet the price of the rental, something that popular leaders have boycotted. The PP thus prevents its regional governments from intervening in the market in cities with skyrocketing prices despite the fact that some mayors have requested it, as is the case of A Coruña or Getafe.
“What I propose is to condition state funds until you comply. Housing is a national emergency, not a joke,” Díaz added in his response to the popular spokesperson. Indeed, a few hours ago, the vice president called for the withdrawal of public aid to those communities that do not apply the law.
Borja Sémper has not yet responded to Díaz’s statements.
The average rental price has decreased in Catalonia, which has followed the norm. It has done so for the first time in years, in the municipalities where rent control of the Housing Law is applied. In the cities that have been classified as stressed, Barcelona in the lead, monthly payments have fallen by 5%. Of course, in the rest, they remain the same, and for many people it is still insufficient.
