The House of Representatives voted 360 to 58 in favor of the legislation.
The American newspaper “The New York Times” said that the Senate is expected to vote on the legislation early Tuesday. President Joe Biden is likely to support it.
After the law is passed, the company will have a year to find a buyer and will most likely try to appeal in court.
The TikTok network considered, in an email on Saturday, that banning it in the United States would “violate the freedom of expression” of 170 million Americans.
She added: “The ban law proposal will destroy seven million companies and close a platform that contributes to the American economy by $24 billion annually.”
What are the reasons for America’s concern about Tik Tok?
- Lawmakers have increasingly expressed concern that TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance, are putting sensitive user data in the hands of the Chinese government, according to the New York Times.
- They also pointed to laws that allow the Chinese government to secretly request data from Chinese companies and citizens for intelligence gathering operations.
- They also worry that China could use TikTok's content recommendations to fuel misinformation, a concern that rose in the United States during the war between Israel and Hamas and the presidential election.
- Critics also say the popular app has fueled the spread of anti-Semitism.
- TikTok denies all these criticisms and allegations, and says it is ready to address US national security concerns.
