When we talk about gamer hardware, we usually think of peripherals or components for our PCs with an untold number of RGB and carbon fiber LEDs in each corner. Secretlab has decided to surprise us all with a truly innovative product, one of a kind.
The company, founded in 2014, has distinguished itself over the years for the production of armchairs (defining them as chairs is very simplistic) for gamers, with sales in 60 countries for over a million satisfied customers. The strength of Secretlab has always been the attention to detail and the high technological level of each of its creations. This passion has now been poured into the creation of Magnus, an upscale desk.
The Magnus structure is mostly constructed of steel, tested for more than a year to avoid defects during the welding and assembly process, and which turns out to be truly solid and robust, capable of supporting more than 100 KG of hardware on its worktop, allowing for different monitor and desktop configurations.
Cable management is absolutely perfect, thanks to a compartment on the back of the desk that completely hides the skein of wires that now distinguishes every PC. To top it all off a satin black coating and red profiles and details to ensure an elegant style almost cyberpunk.
Assembly is one of those rituals that those who have had to do with Secretlab products in the past can remember with an adjective: satisfying. Arrived in an exorbitant weight flatpack, we felt like we were children again, when under tons of wrapping paper, we discovered the new Lego set. And as then, the first task was to open the box and sort the various pieces following the guide, count the screws and associate them with the various pieces used. The advice is to mount it upside down, using the cardboard with which it arrived, as a protection for the top to avoid damaging the satin surface.
Each piece fits together with millimeter precision, thanks also to the various tools supplied, all strictly with the company logo. Once assembled, thanks to the video guide that explains each step in detail, we soon understood why it was recommended to be two to lift and straighten it on the legs: with its 42 KG, Magnus is definitely a piece of furniture that we will rarely move. around the house, but at the same time this weight guarantees solidity and sturdiness. Once raised to a standing position, we stood admiring it for a few minutes, a small (and heavy) masterpiece of modern engineering and style.
The next step was to mount the compartment on the back of the table, which allows us to hide our cables perfectly, thanks also to a removable panel under the desk and with a cover that can be opened and closed to remove or add more. cables. The final touch was the very elegant and luxurious faux leather playmat, which adheres to the surface of the table thanks to a metal bottom and two side bars to hold it in place, effectively making the whole table a huge high rug. class. The advice we take the liberty of offering is to clean it regularly with a slightly damp cloth, to avoid damaging the imitation leather that covers it.
Each add-on also uses powerful magnets: we have panels for the legs to hide the cables, if our desktop is positioned on the ground, metal clips to fix the “surface” cables of the mouse, keyboard, microphone or headphones (and possibly the power supply to recharge mobile phones and gamepads), to put order on the table and even the RGB LED lights, a must in every object for self-respecting gamers
This set (sold as an option) is very original and consists of a magnetic strip to be applied inside the cable tray on the back, connected via USB port to our computer, it required an extension and the connection to a USB HUB and is equipped with a remote control to decide our favorite color, or use one of the predefined options of diffusion or alternation of colors. Everything is really elegant, without stickers and without going crazy to find additional electrical plugs to connect everything.
The dimensions of this desk are average and with its 150 x 70 cm it allowed us to have the PC tower on the left, a main monitor of 28 ” and an angled side of 24 ”, with ample space for mouse, keyboard, microphone and stream deck. A space that can increase enormously if we decide to use external mounts for our monitors, thanks also to the space created on the back for this purpose. Each peripheral seems to find its position in a natural way, without getting in the way of each other, with ample space for our mouse to run freely and perform in anthology quick-scopes.
The height of the legs is adjustable, even if the default one goes very well with the Titan chair already in our possession, allowing us with the fully raised armrests to align our chair perfectly, without creating any difference in height between table and chair, in a solution that does not tire our limbs and avoids pain behind our shoulders.
In addition, the base height is also perfect for the eye-monitor viewing angle, avoiding neck pain. The total absence of cross bars under the desk, common in many models of office tables, also leaves ample room for our legs, allowing us to use a footrest to relax the muscular tension of our lower limbs and facilitate circulation.
Our analysis comes after a field test of more than a month, with a daily use of several hours. Comfort has never decreased and in a constantly evolving world of work, which for many has become “work from home” in the midst of a pandemic, an object like the Magnus desk certainly helps our body not to feel excessive tiredness due to the various hours spent in front of a screen. Spending 12-13 hours a day sitting in front of a screen can be really harmful without the right tools.
The strength of the Magnus desk is certainly the system of magnets that allows us configurations suitable for every use, always expandable, putting order in the chaos that usually characterizes the average PC gamer and his struggle with the skeins of peripheral wires that a sometimes they aren’t even connected. All to compose a minimalist, futuristic design, without ostentation.
So we come to talk about costs. Magnus is not a desk for all wallets. The base price is 499 euros, without any accessories; the playmat adds 79 euros (with the basic Stealth design in black with red details), the magnetic kit (two cable cover panels for the legs, three magnetic clips and ten straps for the wires) adds 49 euros while the RGB lights are another 59 euro to be added to the total. In a moment you get to 686 euros.
The quality of the product certainly pays for itself, and there is undoubtedly a lot of it. But it must also be said that this desk becomes an investment for our long gaming sessions or for our home office, and is unlikely to be replaced by anything else in the medium term. We are not talking about a graphics card that can become obsolete but something that becomes an integral part of our home and office and that deserves a certain kind of investment.
In conclusion, although the price may scare many, the quality of this product is incredible, and it is definitely an aspect of your gamer station that you never thought about. Every detail is meticulously taken care of and after having tried it, and above all admired it for a long time, we can really say that the Singapore company has hit its mark, and we can’t wait to find out what they will “invent” next time.
