World golf was shaken on Friday, when world number one and current Masters champion, American Scottie Scheffler was arrested by the Louisville (Kentucky) Police.
The player tried to evade a police checkpoint installed outside the Valhalla Golf Club, after an accident occurred in which a pedestrian was hit. Scheffler recognized an ESPN journalist at that moment and asked him for help, but that could not prevent him from being taken to jail.
After being booked at the police station and released, the world number one was able to play the second round of the tournament and finished with a good score, -5. Saturday’s poor performance ruined his chance to fight for the title, but he finished in eighth place.
The charges that Scottie Scheffler will have to face
Scheffler faces “charges of assault on an officer, damage, reckless driving and disobeying police signals,” according to the AFP agency.
Louisville police said the vehicle Scheffler was driving accelerated and dragged a police officer, who suffered injuries that required hospital treatment. The player insisted that what happened was “a big misunderstanding.”
Romines assured that the golfer is going to plead “not guilty” and believes that the matter against him will not prosper. This week, the American will play the Charles Schwab Challenge, which will also include Colombians Camilo Villegas and Nico Echavarría.
