Zero points in seven races. This is the balance sheet of Mick Schumacher at the start of his second season in Formula 1. The German driver is continuing on the path he began in 2021, when in his rookie year he had never managed to get a top-10 finish. The 12 months, however, many things have changed: the Haas Schumacher’s is no longer a ‘moving chicane’ destined for the back of the grid, but a respectable mid-group team, currently eighth in the constructors’ classification just two lengths away from the AlphaTauri. Schumacher was also joined by a new teammate, Danish expert Kevin Magnussen, who is making the most of the VF-22 with 15 points collected so far.
TO Montecarlo Schumacher suffered yet another serious accident of his season, ending up against the wall quite heavily in the section of the swimming pools. Fortunately, the driver suffered no physical damage in the impact, but his car was destroyed. Schumacher also had a similar crash this year in the Saudi Arabian GP qualifying, which completely disintegrated his Haas. In an age of roof-conditioned F1, all of this damage has a very heavy impact on the team’s balance sheet. Gunther Steinerteam principal of the American team, has made it clear that the German will no longer have room for error in the next GPs.
But criticism of Schumacher’s work also came from his uncle Ralf, a former F1 driver and today a television commentator in Germany. “The other riders passed that point without problems, but not him – declared a Sky Deutschland former Williams standard bearer – at first I thought it had hit the guardrail and punctured it, but instead it went out of line. This is a mistake you cannot afford to make. He not only ruined his race but damaged the car so badly that it will also affect the team’s balance sheet. Mick has to learn that such mistakes don’t have to happenAnd”he concluded.
