German Chancellor Olaf Scholz pledged his government’s support for the defense sector, and also called for closer cooperation between producers in Europe, when he opened a trade fair on Wednesday.
He said at the International Air Show in Berlin: “Today we see more clearly than before how important it is to have a European and German defense sector that can continuously produce all types of necessary weapons and ammunition.”
He added that Germany “did not attach great importance to the sector in the past.”
He said he strongly supports maintaining and expanding production capabilities. He added: “Therefore, we will request another 20 Eurofighter fighters during this legislative period, in addition to the 38 aircraft currently in preparation.”
He said: Closer cooperation between European partners is necessary, in order to avoid duplication that Europe cannot tolerate. The exhibition, which continues until next Sunday, displays the production of about 600 exhibitors from 30 countries.
