German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called on Saturday for unified measures against the far right, following the attack on a German politician that left him seriously injured. “Democracy is threatened by something like this, which is why expressions of disinterest and surrender are never an option. We must stand together against it,” Schulz said.
Matthias Ecke, 41, a member of the center-left Social Democratic Party and current member of the European Parliament, was attacked by four assailants while putting up campaign posters in the eastern German city of Dresden late on Friday evening.
Police said Ike was seriously injured and taken to hospital for treatment.
At a conference in the German capital, Berlin, regarding the upcoming European elections, Schulz said that the attack on Ike was disappointing.
The German Chancellor added that the fact that such things happen also has to do with the speeches that are made and the mood that is created, referring to the right-wing populist Alternative for Germany party.
Saxony’s Social Democratic Party leaders blamed the AfD and other far-right groups for sowing hatred against democratic politicians and warned that far-right supporters were “now completely unrestrained” and saw democratic politicians as “targets for criticism and attack”.
