The German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, warned today about the effects that could bring the punitive tariffs of the United States in world trade after the decision of the American president, Donald Trump, of imposing new tariffs on China, Canada and Mexico.
“The global exchange of basic goods and products has proven to be a great success story that has allowed prosperity for all of us,” said Scholz to the press during a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
“That is why it is important that we do not divide the world now with many customs barriers, but also make this exchange of goods and services for the future,” added the German Foreign Minister.
When asked about possible European countermeasures, Scholz simply commented that the European Union is a strong economic zone and has “its own action options”, before adding that the EU wants to continue economic relations with the United States on the basis of this fortress.
For his part, the conservative candidate for German and a favorite chancellor in Scholz succession surveys, Friedrich Merz, has joined criticism by ensuring that “tariffs have never been a good idea to resolve commercial policy conflicts” .
Merz has assured that Trump will realize that the tariffs imposed will not have to pay them those who import the United States, but the consumers of that country. “And its tariff policy will also cause resistance in the United States themselves,” he stressed before predicting that measures end up significantly feeding inflation in the United States.
The conservative candidate has generally requested a united response from the European Union (EU). “The European Union must now carry out good negotiations with the United States and Europe must do so with great unity,” said the Democristian leader.
