Totò Schillaci is dead: farewell to the hero of the Magic Nights of Italia ’90. Italian football in mourning
Italian football is in mourning for the death of Totò Schillaci, one of the heroes most loved by all the fans of our country.
Champion with the Messina shirts (256 appearances with 77 goals), Juventus (with whom he won the Italian Cup and the UEFA Cup) and Inter (30 appearances and 11 goals before ending his career in Japan at Jubilee Iwata), but above all eternal symbol of the Italian national team, unforgettable protagonist of the Magical Nights of Italia ’90.
‘Chasing a goal under the sky of an Italian summer’ they were singing Gianna Nannini and Edoardo Bennato in a song that made history.
And those goals were scored by him, Totò Schillaci. Moving everyone.
Six goals, the role of top scorer and best player of that World Cup which ended with the third place of Azeglio Vicini’s national team: the dream of lifting the World Cup at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome was shattered in the semi-final in Naples – on penalties – against Maradona and Caniggia’s Argentina (which equalised the opening goal scored as always by Totò).
Then came a third place, after the 2-1 final win in Bari against Paul Gascoigne’s England.
But Schillaci’s goals remained in the hearts of the Azzurri fans, iconic and unforgettable.
Gravina, ‘farewell to Totò Schillaci, a minute of silence before the races’
“The uncontrollable exultation, in which his face was a symbol of shared joywill forever remain the common heritage of Italian football – recalls the president of the FIGC Gabriele Gravina – Totò was a great footballer, a tenacious symbol of will and redemption, he was able to thrill the blue fans because his football tasted of passion. And it is precisely this indomitable spirit that made him appreciated by everyone and will make him immortal “.
