“At the end of 2023, the extraordinary mobile screening project 'Healthy eyesight' was concluded, aimed at promoting attention to the problems of visual impairments and some pathologies such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy as well as maculopathy. These and many other conditions that threaten sight are asymptomatic in the initial stages, however they can be treated or limited if diagnosed in time by ophthalmologists through periodic checks. This is why I want to reiterate once again the importance of prevention”. Minister Orazio Schillaci renews his invitation to take care of one's health, on the occasion of his speech at the National Congress of the Italian Society of Ophthalmological Sciences (Siso) underway in Rome.
Prevention is crucial, the Minister of Health reiterated, speaking in this case about eye diseases. Because, he pointed out, the numbers speak clearly: “Through the mobile outpatient facilities, a total of 8,671 visits were carried out in the squares of the main Italian cities (average age of participating citizens just over 65 years) and the results show that, despite more of 90% of the subjects declared they could see well, 18.2% of the sample had significant ocular alterations”. Information considered important by Schillaci: “With this project – he concludes – data have been collected which will then be used to start the creation of a national database to know the impact of pathologies and for the development of public health policies for visual protection always more effective”.
