Saudi Arabia plans to host, in early August, the peace talks on Ukraine, which will take place between Kiev, western countries and developing world powers, such as Brazil and India, but without Russia, as revealed this Saturday (29) by the american newspaper The Wall Street Journal
The meeting is scheduled for the 5th and 6th of August and, according to journalistic sources, it will gather in the city of Jeddah senior representatives of up to 30 countries.
According to Western diplomats interviewed by the Wall Street Journalthe hope is that these talks can culminate in a “peace summit” that could be held later this year, at which international leaders can endorse common principles for resolving the war in Ukraine, which, in turn, can serve as a basis for for negotiations between Kiev and Moscow more favorable to the Ukrainians.
The Jeddah meeting would follow on from another held in June, in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, between representatives of Ukraine, the United States, European countries, Brazil, India, Turkey and South Africa, about which little information was disclosed.
According to Wall Street Journalthe White House National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivan, who visited Saudi Arabia this week, is expected to participate on the American side.
The choice of the Arab country for this meeting would seek, according to western diplomats, to favor a possible participation of China, which maintains good relations with Moscow and also with Riyadh.
