There Sardinia is facing an unprecedented water crisis. According to Pier Paolo Roggero, former director of the Agriculture department of the University of Sassari, what was once considered aemergency now it has become the new normal. Heat waves and long periods of drought are becoming more frequent, putting a strain on the management of the island’s water resources.
Sardinia: the numbers of the crisis
Currently, in Baronia and lower Gallura, irrigation has stopped since January. The recent restrictions imposed on farmhouses and accommodation facilities outside residential areas have been temporarily suspended, but the water emergency risks causing public order problems.
During a summit convened by president Alessandra Todde with local mayors and representatives of water bodies, possible solutions were discussed such as the restoration of wells and hillside lakes, the interconnections and the works necessary to contain the enormous waste along the conducted, which currently stands at 51.3% of the resource provided.
The regional strategy
The necessary interventions are outlined in the “Regional strategy for adaptation to climate change”, a plan developed in 2019 by the scientific committee which includes the universities of Cagliari and Sassari and the Department of the Environment. Sardinia was among the first regions in Italy to adopt a plan of this type, but the current situation requiresrapid implementation and effectiveness of these strategies.
The challenge of drought requires the commitment of all of us. It is essential to adopt responsible behavior and contribute to sustainable management of water. Every small gesture can make a difference at a time when every drop counts.
