Santiago Taboada, candidate for the Head of Government for the “Va X La CDMX” coalition, signed today a series of commitments in favor of sports and announced the creation of the first high-performance sports center in Mexico City. This initiative is part of what he described as “the best sports project that the country’s capital has ever had.”
“For me, athletes are a priority. I demonstrated it in Benito Juárez and I want to do it throughout Mexico City. Today, the best public sports spaces are in Benito Juárez and I want to tell you that for me it will be a priority that the city’s sport takes first place in the National Sports Games,” Taboada highlighted.
The candidate emphasized the great opportunity that a city with more than 9 million inhabitants represents to develop the best athletes in the country and the world. He pointed out that his administration will focus on providing decent and quality conditions for the athletes of CDMX.
“We are not going to stop for sports spaces, we are going to give full maintenance to the entire sports infrastructure of the city, because the public infrastructure is very large, it is just very abandoned… There will be a lot of work, a lot of support and a lot of future for sport” .
His plan highlights the creation of the first public fund to support high-performance athletes who represent Mexico City in national and international competitions.
Taboada recognized that the current public budget is not enough, so he will work in collaboration with businessmen to provide resources in exchange for tax benefits.
“I love the best athletes. Here we are not going to make them go to waste to buy their uniforms. Here we are going to care that they have the best conditions and support for their travel expenses, training and that of their teachers. Therefore, in addition of the high performance center, we will create the first public fund so that all athletes can go to their competitions without having to ask for money or make family collections,” said Taboada.
The standard bearer of the PAN, PRI and PRD stressed that one of his main goals is the massification of sports in Mexico City, so that each and every Chilango can practice some sporting activity.
“Next, organized sports have to come. Through talent detection and strengthening sports areas, we will be able to find the best swimmers, runners and other athletes.”
Santiago Taboada also addressed sports promoters who are not part of the government, who organize fitness, boxing and other disciplines groups in parks and public spaces, but who have been rejected by the authorities. “
“We want to organize these promoters, give them additional training and continue promoting sport in public spaces.”
The event had the support of prominent national and international athletes, such as Tatiana Ortiz, Olympic medalist in diving; Eduardo Ávila, Paralympic medalist in judo; “Púas” Olivares, boxing champion; Shaggy Martínez, soccer player, and several professional wrestlers, coaches and members of the Mexican Olympic Committee.
Taboada assured that the Head of Government will maintain a firm commitment to sports, with the aim of restoring the social fabric and offering development opportunities to youth.
“We know what it means for sports facilities to be in good condition. Getting young people out of addictions and giving them decent sports spaces is not enough. What will do is give them the opportunity to have a sports career that generates certainty, future and income. We want to compete with the best cities in the world to have the best athletes in the world,” he stated.
Regarding the polls that put the Morena candidate in the lead, Taboada commented that this week there has been a “synchronized swim” in the results, hinting at a possible bias. “The best poll was the Zócalo. We are going to beat them,” she said.
