The Murcian referee José María Sánchez Martínez will be in charge of directing the first classic of the season, this Saturday at 9:00 p.m., between Real Madrid and Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabéu. This will be the seventh time that this referee has officiated a classic and the balance so far could not be more even.
Sánchez Martínez has directed four classics in the League, with two victories for each team. The last of them, in October 2022, ended with a 3-1 victory for Real Madrid with goals from Benzema, Valverde and Rodrygo. Ferran Torres scored for the Blaugrana team.

He was also in Barça’s 3-0 victory in the League at the Bernabéu in December 2017 with goals from Messi, Luis Suárez and Aleix Vidal. In this match he sent off Carvajal, and in the 5-1 Barça victory in October 2018 with three goals from Luis Suárez, one from Coutinho and another from Arturo Vidal.
And he directed the Barça victory in the second leg of the Cup semi-finals played in February 2019. Barça triumphed at the Bernabéu 0-3 and goals from Luis Suárez twice and Varane’s own goal.
