With a hoarse voice in a packed Ateneo de Madrid, Salvador Illa has defended his new model of Spain with a pronounced federal horizon. And what position Catalonia should have in it and how the region faces this situation have been the main questions that the president of the Generalitat has answered.
During a speech given at the Metafuturo 2024 forum, organized by Atresmedia in the capital, Illa explained that the three pillars on which Catalonia is based They are self-government, active involvement in the improvement of Spain and its participation in Europe alongside the Government.
Regarding self-government, the president has stressed that Catalonia has “its own personality” and its purpose is to recover powers. “We want to be external again,” said the socialist, who has influenced the progress made during these ten weeks of mandate.
Among them, Illa has emphasized the reform of the Public Administration with the elimination of the prior appointment, and the “most ambitious Housing Plan in Spain in terms of VPO”, which will build 50,000 affordable properties with an investment of 4.4 billion of euros until 2030.
As for the autonomous financing reforma concept that is included within self-government, Illa has celebrated that all the CCAA agree that it must be renewed. “Catalonia has made a proposal to improve it, It does not go against anyone, it is a project that demands solidarity with the rest of the territories. In short, a Spain with a federal horizon,” he commented.
“No CCAA is more than another”
In this sense, Illa has stressed that no Spanish Government prior to that of Pedro Sánchez has granted so many resources to the Autonomous Communities. For this reason, the leader of the Generalitat has made it clear that “Catalonia is not going anywhere, it is going to actively participate in the defense of the Spanish model, we are not leaving, we are staying, but it will not be silent or silent. We are going to defend our vision of Spain in all seatsa Spain with a federal and diverse horizon”.
“No CCAA represents more than another and this seems to bother some, but we are going to actively participate in our defense of the Spanish model,” he stressed.
With respect to Europe, Illa has highlighted that “it necessarily has to be strengthened” and Catalonia, “hand in hand with Spain”, has to get involved in this with a “constructive” voice.
Respect and collaboration
As for how Catalonia is going to be a protagonist in all of the above, the president has pointed out that it will do so “respecting the institutionsbe clear that they belong to everyone, not to anyone or a political party.
Second, they will work to have an attitude of collaboration, not confrontation, which is “the perfect path.” “What does it benefit citizens to refuse to meet with the President of the Government?” he asked, in clear reference to Isabel Díaz Ayuso’s rudeness to Pedro Sánchez.
And thirdly, “trying to carry out three revolutions in Catalonia: that of good government, that of normality and finally, the revolution of respect. “We urgently need to recover the politics of hope and put aside fear, which never brings prosperity. Nothing is politically possible from solitude and Catalonia will rise to the occasion,” Salvador Illa promised to end his speech.
