Sadiq Khan wins a third term as mayor of London
Today, Saturday, Sadiq Khan, the candidate of the opposition British Labor Party, won a third term as mayor of London at the expense of the ruling Conservative Party.
Han outperformed his conservative rival, Susan Hall, by a large margin, after all areas of the capital announced their results in the local elections.
Voters were invited to vote in legislative by-elections won by the Labor Party, which coincided with a vote to renew some local officials in England and Wales and in 11 municipalities.
The results showed that the Labor Party won more than 180 seats and the presidency of 8 additional local councils, while the Conservatives lost about 470 seats and at least 10 local councils.
The significant gains achieved by the Labor opposition enhance the chances of its leader, Keir Starmer, assuming the presidency of the government after the legislative elections scheduled to be held later this year.
“Today, we celebrate the beginning of the turning of the page, one of the last steps before the legislative elections,” Starmer said on Saturday in Mansfield in the East Midlands, where he celebrated the election of Labor Claire Ward as mayor.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who seeks to unite conservative ranks, for his part, on Saturday, defended his policy, especially those related to his plan to deport immigrants to Rwanda and cut taxes.
He said that “the Labor Party did not win in the places they said they would win” to obtain a majority following the upcoming legislative elections, stressing in an article published in The Telegraph that “only the Conservatives have a plan” for the country.
In addition to London, the results of six other local elections in major cities, including Manchester and Liverpool, will be announced today, Saturday.
