The German citizens will face drastically higher electricity prices. Olaf Scholz relies on the construction of new and expensive gas-fired power plants. There would be a cheaper alternative. A comment by Georg Anastasiadis.
Anyone who makes themselves open to blackmail as a state is also blackmailed. The future traffic light government received a foretaste of what it is like to be dependent on the benevolence of autocrats like Vladimir Putin before it took office. After weeks of maneuvering, the Russian president now wants to make the effort to refill Europe’s empty gas storage facilities. His state media celebrate him as the savior of Europe. In the days before that, Putin had made no secret of the fact that his gas could flow faster once the (politically contested) operating permit for the Baltic Sea pipeline had been obtained.
Scholz and his traffic light friends do not want to learn the lesson from Moscow at all
Unfortunately, SPD chancellor candidate Olaf Scholz and his traffic light friends do not want to learn the lesson from Moscow at all. Undeterred, they are relying on even more Putin’s gas as an energy bridge until the distant day when there is enough wind and solar power – even though Germany already covers more than 50 percent of Russia’s gas requirements. It would be up to the government to continue operating the six remaining nuclear reactors beyond 2022 to ensure Germany’s basic electricity supply until enough renewables (and electricity grids!) Are available. But Olaf Scholz would rather build expensive new gas-fired power plants than revise the breakneck decision of the predecessor to phase out coal and nuclear at the same time. And the FDP lacks the courage to correct its course that is overdue.
The price for this policy is paid by the climate – unlike the atom, the fossil fuel gas is not CO2-neutral – and the little man who is otherwise so fondly conjured up by the SPD, for whom the cost of electricity grows over his head. Because Putin, who should blame him, is paying dearly for his scarce gas. No wonder that people all over Europe shake their heads at these carefree Germans who don’t care about their independence.
