The Polish prime minister’s office tapped on Twitter on Sunday that Poland is not sending fighter jets to Ukraine.
United States considers giving Poland replacement fighter jets if Poland decides to send its own fighter jets to the Ukrainian Air Force. Poland belongs to the Defense League NATO.
The United States Secretary of State said this Antony Blinken on Sunday during a visit to the Moldovan capital Chisinau. Blinken’s comments were reported by news agencies Reuters and AFP.
According to Blinken, the United States is “very, very actively” looking at the situation of Polish aircraft. Prior to his visit to Moldova, Blinken visited Poland on Saturday and spoke with representatives of the Polish administration.
On Sunday Blinken said the United States is having a very close discussion with the Ukrainian authorities about their needs.
Once the latest information on needs has been obtained, the United States and its allies will find out what kind of help each could offer Ukraine in defense against the Russian invasion, Blinken said.
Several U.S. media reported on Saturday a possible deal whereby Poland would send Mig-29 fighters planned in the Soviet Union to Ukraine and Poland would receive F-16 fighters from the United States in return. The Mig-29 is a familiar aircraft to Ukrainian air force pilots.
However, the Polish Prime Minister’s Office said on Sunday on Twitterthat Poland is not sending fighter jets to Ukraine and is not allowing its airports to be used in war.
However, according to several US media reports, Poland has been considering sending fighter jets to Ukraine since last week.
A spokesman for Russia’s defense ministry said on Sunday that if a country offered its airports to Ukrainian air forces to attack Russian forces, that country could be considered a party to an “armed conflict” (Russia still does not talk about war as war), Russian news agency Interfax reported.
Blinken also visited the Polish-Ukrainian border on Saturday and met with the Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleban. During the meeting, Kuleba strongly reiterated Ukraine’s desire to have fighter jets for the Air Force.
After ten days of fierce warfare, Ukraine’s “top demand are fighters and air defense systems,” Kuleba said Saturday.
“If we lose the heavens, a lot more blood will flow to the earth,” Kuleba said after a meeting with Blinken at a joint news conference.
A significant part of the Ukrainian air force still appears to be operational, and neither Russia nor Ukraine has clear air control over Ukraine. According to various reports, each country has lost several planes in the war. According to the Ukrainian army, Russia has lost as many as 44 aircraft.
However, Russia has a large air force, and their full use could destroy entire cities at once.
